Tip #7: WUI- Walking while Intoxicated or I don’t have a clue
I thought I have heard it all. How about this new fact, pedestrians involved in drunken driving accidents are up, but not how you think. It appears that more people are being hit by cars, trains and bikes because they, the pedestrian are drunk. Someone gets hit by a car every 2 hours (ABC News). If we as drivers did not have enough to worry about, now we have to make sure someone doesn’t come off the sidewalk and fall down drunk right in front of the car. Most of these accidents are happening in the middle of the street and not at the intersection. So watch out drivers, you never know who might just pop out.
You thought I was done, no way. It seems there has also been an increase in pedestrians being hit by cars while wearing headphones and/or texting. I think it’s time for everyone to stop a second and realize that there is more going on around them then just a phone or listing to music. If you’re out in traffic and crossing streets and you don’t hear the siren of the police car or see that the traffic light has changed because you’re preoccupied with your phone you take the real risk of getting hurt or even killed.
Take the time to focus, know your surroundings, listen to the birds and the bees and the cars and the trucks. It is so easy to get distracted today, try to realize that if you don’t know where you are or what you’re doing, why do you think somebody else will
Stay alive- don’t drink, text, phone, dance, jump, poll vault, swim, etc. while walking or driving at the same time.
